birdscolombiabigColombia’s stunning biodiversity and its natural settings has earned the country top honors as the best ecotourism destination in the world at the most largest tourism fair in China: The World Travel Fair.

The fair will be held in Shanghai from May 9th through May 11th and will gather more than 45,000 visitors and 550 international exhibitors; it will also showcase their local gastronomy and services in addition to the country destinations.

The nomination is significant considering that it acknowledges the potential of the Colombian nature tourism industry in Asian markets with an important outflow of world travelers. In China, Proexport Colombia promotes tourism options in ecotourism, rich heritage, sun and beach destinations, and adventure destinations,” explained the President of Proexport, Maria Claudia Lacouture.

China has changed in its consumer patterns and consequently vacation traveling has become a trend and a necessity for Chinese people who crave to visit other countries and exotic destinations to enrich their cultural knowledge.

These facts are in tune with the Colombian tourist options: Colombia is the country with the highest number of bird species (1,907) of which approximately 80 are endemic to the country. The country also features the highest number of hummingbird species (155) with 14,000 families and 3,000 species of butterflies. As for mammals, 456 species represent 7% of the world’s total population.

According to Euromonitor International, China is the fifth country with the highest number of world tourists accounting for more than 45 million departures. Based on information provided by the Immigration Department of Colombia, the country received more than 8,087 Chinese travelers in 2013, that is, 5.8% more compared to 2012 when the country received 7,646 travelers.
