One of things in life I enjoy the most is Salsa dancing. There are few pleasures that exceed the one that results from dancing ... with a good dancing partner that is. I have not danced all my life, in fact I remember that when I was in my early adolescence y was totally clumsy. However things change and for several years, specially while I was living abroad, dancing became my meditation scheme. I also went into ballroom dances such as tango, foxtrot and waltz. I enjoyed them all, but my roots and my heart belong to Salsa. I never knew why the feel for Salsa is so deep within me since Salsa is not originally Colombia (even less, Austrian). Salsa was created during the 1970´s in New York! I went to Cali ins earch for the roots of Salsa and spent 5 days during the Festival Mundial de Salsa.

A few days ago I read the following quote by Rudyard Kipling: "The first condition of understanding a foreign country is to smell it". I thought that seemed obvious for him since he comes from India, a country known for its contrasting smells. The quote stood in my mind and today, after three days of non-stop rain I decided to smell Bogota.

If you want to improve your Spanish, or want to learn it from scratch, consider Colombia as number one choice. Aside from meeting other few foreigners you will be in contact with our culture and traditions at all times. Colombia is still an unspoiled paradise where the locals are eager to meet foreigners and share with them our identity... in Spanish.

It is right now, when I have been in the office for more than two consecutive weeks, and it is 5pm and the computers around are stealing away my energy, it is now that I dream with being in Providence Island. In May I felt the need to leave Bogota and seclude myself somewhere beautiful, somewhere away from technology and traffic jams, somewhere across the sea. Providence was the perfect hideaway.
