The breakwater was built in Bocagrande in order to prevent the passage of ships between Punta Icacos and Tierrabomba, at a time when pirates were trying to plunder Spanish treasure. This defensive dike is part of the architectural ensemble declared a UNESCO Site Of Human, Historical, and Cultural Heritage.
