You are here
In the centre of Santander department travellers experience complementary activities. On one side are calm and silence, which are the essence of Barichara, a town in warm, dry climate with stone streets belonging to the Colombian People’s Heritage Network. On the other side is the action offered by adventure activities such as paragliding and 'rafting' in neighbouring San Gil.
What to do in Barichara
It is easy to take good pictures in Barichara. Walking through its streets, paved with clay-coloured stones, visitors cross tree-lined plazas while viewing the packed-earth walls of the houses roofed with clay tiles. From a lookout point you can see the Suarez River Canyon, where 'rafting' is practiced, and near the town you can visit the quiet village of Guane.
From Barichara, where the ochre tones of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception print a single label on the town’s main park. Founded in 1705, and just half an hour south by car, San Gil is the most important sports adventure destination of Colombia. There you can experience intense emotions when paragliding, 'rafting', 'rappel' and enjoying other activities.
ACTIVITIES YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS
Visit churches and an archaeological museum to learn about Barichara’s past; eat “fat-bottomed” ants and go to Gallineral park in San Gil (20 minutes south of Barichara).
