Breathless in the Quindio


The Quindio is Colombia's smallest “departamento” or province, but it is without a doubt one which is packed with many attractions. Every village in Quindio is worthy of a day trip. Recently I visited Salento, with side trips to nearby Cocora valley and finishing up in Filandia.

The Real Colombia is Found in its Villages

Most tourists will spend their entire time in Colombia within the confines of its major cities, many limiting their escapades to Bogota, Medellin and Cartagena. This is a mistake! While you will get a dose of Colombia's unique culture via its cities, these are modern cosmopolitan centers and their inhabitants' lifestyles are eons away from the traditions of the past. Fortunately, for a taste of what I call the "real Colombia", you need only venture  a bit outside the city to find it.

Make the Most of a Weekend in Salento

Right in the heart of Colombia’s Eje Cafetero (Coffee Axel) there is a highway, which runs between the cities of Pereira and Armenia. Each lovely in their own right, the real gem of this region comes when you deviate from this road and dip down into the pleasant mountain town of Salento.
