Old Providence: the Perfect Caribbean Island cliche

Below us, the island came into view encircled by a brittle and protective ring of coral reefs made distinguishable by the white water ripping at the edges and creating a turquoise iris effect skirting the white sandy edges of the Caribbean island of Providencia. Our Russian-built aircraft bobbled in the turbulence kicked up by thermals and updrafts resulting from the gnarled volcanic peaks to our left.

Cycling in Suesca!

For lovers of outdoor sports, there's no better place than the town of Suesca, a few hours north of Bogotá. It's a great place for hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing. Perhaps best of all, you might be the only foreigner in town.

Eighty Years of Fernando Botero


Botero observes that many people compare his work to that of novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Botero says this may be because both come from the same environment. The two men belong to the same generation, but Botero grew up near Medellin, while Marquez grew up on Colombia's Caribbean coast.


Famed Colombian painter/sculptor Fernando Botero turned 80 recently, with comemorations in Mexico, New York and, of course, Colombia. Among the more moderate but approachable exhibitions is the one on the wall of the Biblioteca Luis Angel Arango in Bogotá's La Candelaria neighborhood.
