In 2007, he quit his office job in northern Virginia to embark on a dream trip around the world. In January 2009, after visiting more than 20 countries, he arrived in Medellin, Colombia.

He was immediately enamored with the city, and proceeded to spend the next 6 months delving into Antioquian culture, learning Spanish, and more importantly, learning to dance salsa. David continues to spend several months per year living in Medellin.

Escape to Copacabana

Fincas are the Colombian version of country homes, and it's common for paisas to escape the big city atmosphere of Medellin for fincas in nearby pueblos on the weekends.  My friend Rodrigo had generously invited me to stay at his family's finca in Copacabana one such weekend.


The Annual Flower Parade in Medellin

La Feria de las Flores began with Desfile de Silleteros (a flower parade) in the 1950′s, and has evolved into a 10-day festival with a myriad of events and parties to suit every paisa in Antioquia.

My First Carnaval in Colombia

It was February 2009, and within just a few weeks of arriving in Medellin, I forced myself to leave for Carnaval, one of the country's biggest annual celebrations. Billed as the 2nd largest Carnaval celebration after Brazil's parties, I knew it was an event I had to experience firsthand.
