Villa de Leyva: the square is probably the largest of its kind in Colombia. / Photo: Flickr user konotour-travel.
Villa de Leyva is one of the magic, beautiful and diverse villages which attracts tourists most. The buildings there have made it a film set for local TV and film productions such as "La Pola”, “Paraíso Travel” and “La gente honrada”.
The cobbles in many of the streets date back to Spanish colonial times. They are lined with whitewashed-wall, tiled-roof houses which have been home to one or another leader in the War of Independence – including Antonio Ricaurte whose last act as the champion of the revolutionary forces was to blow up the Spanish arsenal.
The square of Villa de Leyva is the largest town square in Colombia -14.000 m2- surrounded by a desert which surely holds the remains of many more fossils that will show how this mountain once formed part of a seabed.
