The Father of Quindío

The history of the Coffee Triangle is full of stories about the families who struggled to make their region and independent Department; and it was not until July 1, 1966 that their claims and complaints about territory belatedly had their effect.

Salento was the first municipality formally created and organized, ion 1842, long before Quindio was even thought of. So it is sometimes known as the “Father of Quindio”, as being the first self-governing community in the region.

This little village was one of the centers of the culture of the Antioquians and the muleteers. One enduring feature is still a favorite on the table: the bandeja paisa, which brings together avocadoes, red beans, pork crackling, mincemeat, rice, plantain, sausage and eggs – a perfect end to a hard day´s work in the hills.
