Tips for a trip to Cartagena

  • Take Light, comfortable clothing for hot weather. On a hot day, the temperature may reach 32º C (89º F).
  • Take sports shoes for guided tours of the historic center
  • You can buy or rent special water-sports equipment. Consult your hotel or go to a specialized shop.
  • Take a thin jumper in case the temperature drops suddenly or the airconditioning is too cold for you (e.g. airport, convention center, restaurants etc).


  • Taken analgesics and anti-histamines in case of headaches or over-exposure to the sun or insect bites.
  • Make sure you take plenty of liquids during walks through the streets.
  • Have a yellow-fever vaccination a week before traveling.


  • Always use a sun-blocker.
  • Apply insect repellent.
  • Some hotels in the walled city have bicycles for guests to hire and ride around the historic center. The service is usually free. Ask at the hotel reception.
  • For a ride in a horse-drawn carriage, ask as a hotel or at a carriage-station - there are several in the historic center. The service is available by day or night inside and outside the old city.
  • Always use certified guides for your trips. The hotel reception desk will give reliable information about them.
