Climate
Thanks to the fact that the Eastern Mountain Range of the Colombian Andes crosses the department, all thermal floors are present and the range of temperature goes from 35˚C to below zero at El Cocuy Snow Peak.
Predominant economic activities
Agriculture, cattle raising, services, industry, oil production, emerald, coal, iron, and limestone mining. The economy is also strong in terms of handicrafts and tourism.

The highest point is El Cocuy Snow Peak, at 5,490 meters above sea level; the lowest may be below 500 meters.
Area
23,189 km², which represent 1.03% of the country total.
Borders
The departments of Santander and Norte de Santander, and the Republic of Venezuela to the north; the departments of Cundinamarca and Meta to the south; the departments of Arauca and Casanare to the west; and finally, the departments of Antioquia and Caldas to the west.
