Since colonial times, this department has been renowned for cocoa and tobacco production. During the 19th century, this agricultural industry flourished in villages like Socorro, Barichara, Piedecuesta, Floridablanca, Giron, Aratoca and San Gil, thanks to the influx of German immigrants.

Nature’s invitation

Nowadays, numerous haciendas welcome visitors. One example is the Hostal Misión Santa Bárbara, in Barichara, which has been used as a location for TV series. Barichara is remarkable because its inhabitants preserve the traditional art of stone carving.
