Jazz in the Park Festival in Bogotá
September is not only the Mes del Amor y la Amistad (love and friendship month). In Bogotá, September is also the Mes del Jazz (jazz month). During this time of year, the Colombian capital fills up with romantic melodies that emerge from saxophones, pianos, and trumpets, in the best New Orleans style.
Jazz al Parque is a musical encounter during which the inhabitants of Bogotá can approach jazz and enjoy the music of outstanding artists that turn Bogotá into an epicenter of this musical genre.
The residents of Bogotá have been listening to jazz in public since 1996, when the Jazz Festival began.
Jazz al Parque is the best opportunity for putting aside the belief that this is music for intellectuals and the learned. Actually, it is the opposite. Jazz is a universal heritage in the field of fusions and autochthonous experimentation as well as the most influential genre of the twentieth century.
In the words of culture journalist Juan Carlos Garay, jazz is “the most vibrant art form of the modern era”. [...] It is the music that best expresses freedom.”
Just as its name indicates, the Jazz al Parque Festival takes place outdoors in the parks of the Colombian capital:
The residents of Bogotá enjoy jazz in public since the creation of the Festival in 1966.
Ever since, every September, seductive jazz melodies travel throughout Bogotá inviting bogotanos and national tourists to listen to world class jazz interpreters.
The purpose of the Festival, which is backed by the radio stations of Bogotá universities, from which new musicians rise each year, is to project Colombian artists to a national level and to obtain their international recognition.
