Colombia is a mecca for nature lovers, boasting about 1800 bird species or 10 per cent of the world total, which is more than any other nation; in four weeks we see 700, almost the total number known from Australia.
EcoTurs runs lodges for visitors in ProAves reserves. At El Dorado Lodge, high up in the Santa Martas, guests enjoy splendid views over the Caribbean coast as hundreds of hummingbirds attracted to nectar feeders in the gardens buzz about. The hummingbirds are unafraid of people, affording arm's-length photo opportunities. The beauty of these birds is reflected in exquisite names: sapphire-throated emerald, frilled coquette, shining sunbeam, tourmaline sunangel.
