The time of year with the greatest number of long weekends is almost here. Thanks to the routes included by the Colombian Government in the “Vive Colombia, Viaja por Ella” (Live Colombia, Travel through It) program, land travelers may immediately start to plan their itineraries for touring the country in a relaxed fashion.
Following the seven routes had Valledupar and its Festival of the Vallenato Legend as its destination, comes the May-June season with many options to get to know and enjoy.
Regardless of whether vehicles take the routes in caravans or not, the authorities guarantee the total control of roads to ensure the safety of all tourists.
On the long weekend of the Feast of the Ascension (May 22 – 25, 2009), six routes will be organized, among them the one that goes to Puerto Gaitán, in the department of Meta, the site of the celebration of the International Cachama Festival (the cachama is an Amazonian fish). The destination for the long weekend of May 28 – 31 is Ginebra, in the department of Valle del Cauca, the seat of the traditional Mono Núñez Festival. Three routes will lead to this event, which is considered an important cultural heritage of the nation.
The “Vive Colombia” trips
June will present us with three consecutive long weekends and many, many traditional events and fairs. The Agricultural, Livestock, Handicrafts and Fish Fair will take place in Barrancabermeja, in the department of Santander, from June 12 to 15; seven routes will guide travelers to the event. The following weekend, from June 19 to June 22, roads will be ready with 22 routes to attend, among other events, the Ibagué Folklore Festival, and the Festival of the Pito Atravesado (transverse flute) and the Hammock, in Morroa, department of Sucre.
During the last long weekend (June 26 – 29), there will be an ample cultural offer along the 27 routes of “Viva Colombia”. They will take visitors to The Feasts of Saint Peter in Neiva (department of Huila), the International Coffee Pageant in Calarcá (department of Quindío), the International Joropo Tournament in Villavicencio (department of Meta), and the Tuluá Fair in the department of Valle del Cauca.
