  • Medellin is Colombia’s second-largest city and the capital of the department (the equivalent of Province in Canada) of Antioquia.

In every restaurant menu, you will find a rice-and-bean combination, but Medellin gastronomy has more to offer.

What to do in Medellin?

  • There are other stunning towns near Medellin. The department of Antioquia is known for its beautiful landscapes, little towns and coffee farms. Just within an hour or two from the city, you will be able to visit towns such as Guatape, Santafe de Antioquia, Jardin and Tamesis (some of them are considered Colombian national heritage towns). This is a perfect plan for a weekend getaway or even a day trip. If you travel around Antioquia, you will discover how diverse and beautiful Colombia really is.
  • The nightlife in Medellin is famous worldwide and one of the reasons why most people want to visit this city. El Poblado neighbourhood is known for offering a variety of bars, nightclubs and restaurants. The incredible weather makes Medellin the perfect destination to have some fun at night with family and friends.  
  • The city has an extensive public transportation system that includes the subway and the aerial cable (MetroCable). This makes it easier to get around the city, and it is a great way to experience the culture. Medellin's transportation system is known for its cleanness, reliability and high-quality service. 
  • The Flower Festival is the biggest cultural event of the year in Medellin, and one of the most unique festivals in the country. For one week, the city welcomes people from all over the world to celebrate the beauty of its flowers and the diversity of the country.

Places to visit in Medellin: 

  • "Plaza Botero": home to twenty-three Fernando Botero’s sculptures. Near there you will find the Antioquia Museum.
  • "Berrio" Park: This is a small park that is always filled with juice vendors and local street performers.
  • "Parque Explora" (Explore Park): This is an interactive science museum that demonstrates the laws of physics trough the experience of playing games. 
  • "Pueblito Paisa": It’s a little town located on the top of the "Nutibara" Hill. Once you get there, you will enjoy the 360-degree view of the city. 
  • Botanical Garden: This is an excellent option when you want to take a break from the city noise. It has a beautiful lake and a butterfly house. 
  • "Arvi" park: This is a large nature reserve. There you will find hiking trails and activities like horseback riding and picnic areas. 
  • "Parque de los pies descalzos" (Barefoot Park): This is a great place to relax and kick off your shoes. There you will find sand boxes, water boxes, a bamboo garden and a grassy area, all of them are designed for people to enjoy the park barefoot.
  • "Mercado del rio": This market is the first food market in Colombia, it opened its doors to the public in 2016. There, you will find local and international food, wine, beer and much more
  • The castle museum: This is a place inspired by the castles of the French Loire Valley, It has beautiful gardens and a beautiful view of the city.  It is a great place to go for a picnic or on a date.
  • Antioquia Museum: The main exhibit if the museum is the collection of Fernando Botero’s paintings and sculptures, it also contains works of international artists and exhibit religious and colonial art from the conquest period in South America. 
  • "Museo Casa de la Memoria" (Remembrance museum): The purpose of the museum is to show one of the largest armed conflicts in the history of South America. The place offer a space to the armed conflict victims and their families to dignify and disseminate their views on the violent cycle. 
  • Spain library: The modern black library is formed for three massive non symmetric buildings. The library main focus is housing a variety of programs, resources, and services dedicated to all ages and with special emphasis on toddlers.
